Learn to grasp the knacks of portrait drawing with reference to various angles, the complexities of detailing in different mediums and the skill of combining ideation and composition to create full fledged concepts and artworks - the fundamentals essential for a young independent budding artist.

We offer three progressive sections for this level in the course:

section a

In section A of our Advanced level, students will learn about the methods and techniques used in advanced portrait drawing, as well as the expertise needed for drawing portraits at different angles. They will also learn to recognise the tones and shading needed to create a portrait with accurate proportions.

DESCRIPTION

front view portrait: main features

Understand the basics of the facial balance. Get familiar with the placement of each facial feature on the face. Learn to break down details of the face such as the eyes, nose and mouth through positive and negative shapes.

front view portrait: secondary features

Learn to add secondary features such as the face shape, hair, neck and ears with reference to placements previously learnt to create a portrait with facial harmony.

side view portrait

Understanding the anatomy of side portraits and learn to sketch out a side view portrait. Complete with all visible facial features in relation to each other with accurate proportions, complete with a whole head drawing.

3/4 view portrait: main features

Understand the facial balance in main facial features and relative proportions in relation to the ¾ view of the face. Learn to sketch out these different facial features at a ¾ angle with accurate proportions.

3/4 view portrait: secondary features

Learn to complete the ¾ portrait with the secondary features of the face (face shape, hair, neck and ears) relative to the main features previously learnt.

Portrait with Realistic Shading & Tones: part 1 - Shading

Portrait with Realistic Shading & Tones: part 2 - detailing

Understand the difference between pencil or charcoal shading in realistic portraits and learn to build up tones and forms with shading. Learn to use and manipulate the chosen medium with control to create minute textural details to the portrait.

portrait with colour scheme

Understand how different colour palette choices can affect overall the overall mood of an artwork and get familiarised with the more frequently used colour palettes. Learn to build up tones and forms in a portrait using the colours previously chosen on a previously drawn portrait of the students' choice.

  • Upon completion of all lessons in this course, students will progress to the next section of this course. However, progression to the next section of the course is dependent on the final artwork produced at the end of the course section.

  • If the 8 lessons are not completed, the student will not be allowed to progress to the next level of course.

  • Feedback will be given after 8 lessons.

In section B of our Advanced level, students will learn about how the attention to details such as fabrics and reflections add to the collectiveness of an artwork, and gain a sensitivity to such complex details that are essential to the final artwork. They will also gain competency in using pen as a medium.

Throughout these three lessons, students will complete an A3 observational artwork. The artwork will be about a water-related subject. (etc. water ripples / puddles / water reflections)

Understand how light falls onto water and/or reflective surfaces and learn how to break down distortions into simple shapes. Learn about new techniques for the wet mediums (acrylic and watercolour). The final artwork will be done in the wet medium of the students' choice. (acrylic/watercolour)

rendering texture on fabrics: part 1

rendering texture on fabrics: part 2

Understand the tonal values required when creating artworks that includes drapery/fabric materials, and how to capture details and tones through rendering reflections and shadows on fabric folds. Learn to create different fabric creases and folds with the medium chosen as well as rendering the texture/designs on the pictorial reference of the fabric chosen.

Get refreshed on different drawing and hatching techniques with line weight - with pen instead of graphite mediums. Understand how to create textures and details but combining different techniques .

The lessons should end with the students having gained adequate control over using pens as a tricky medium and demonstrate skills in producing artworks with good line quality and textures using pens.

In section C of our Advanced level, students will learn to translate ideation and inspiration into a viable concept as well as using mediums in a more versatile manner that allows for a freedom of style which further develops into the students' own preferred method of creation. This in turn encourages the growth of the students' own personal style and conceptual development.

Understand how to transform mental inspiration into workable and viable concepts by picking out key ideas and learning to build an artwork from these ideas. Combine ideation with composition techniques previously learnt in previous course levels to produce a well-balanced artwork in gouache or watercolour.

03

loose painting:

part 1

Learn to create a painting that focuses on capturing the essence of a scene/subject instead of focusing on details. Understand how to not overwork paintings and learn when to "let loose" when it comes to using control at the right time in paintings.

loose painting:

part 2

Understand how to simplify a complicated scene by focusing on line quality and shapes, and how to use negative space to enhance the loose watercolour style. Learn to build confident painting strokes.

stylistic painting (palette knife or impressionist strokes): part 1

stylistic painting (palette knife or impressionist strokes): part 2

Understand the usage of each palette knife in the creation of different effects on the canvas and how impressionist painters break down their colours. Learn to translate the reference photo into vivid colours and how to make stylistic choices with brush strokes and colour harmony.

Complete a full A3 artwork with all the techniques learnt in this lesson.

stylistic painting (mood colours): part 2

Refresh on previous colour concepts learnt especially on how colour palettes in relation to mood creation. Understand and learn how to incorporate these colour palettes into paintings.

  • Upon completion of all lessons in this section, students will be presented with a Certificate of Participation/Achievement for the course. The certificate presented is dependent on the students' progress in lessons and the final artworks produced.

  • If the 8 lessons are not completed, the student will not be presented with the certificate that marks completion.

  • Feedback will be given after 8 lessons.
